The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Unveil a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Largest RPG to Date

The speculation about this year's gaming ceremony was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The mystery has been revealed. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer that included striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.

A Different Direction

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio warned that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This distinction hints that the team might be crafting a real-time experience instead of another tactical title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a announcement clip is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it kicked off the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, branching plots, and deep class systems—elements that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.

Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of specialized paths only possible if you're playing as a distinct build with a unique decision path.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, letting players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be completed in a variety of manners, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can look forward to more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
