Tetris Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

Whenever a major awards ceremony draws close, one notices a demand for the addition of new categories to honor unsung work and satisfy the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room for most games within them.

Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely during that awards season
  • A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often compact experiences, however the design behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
