The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
